Dr. Benjamin's Presentation

On Tuesday September 14, in freshman seminar we were lectured by Dr.Benjamin's eloquence of the scribes.A scribe is someone who writes documents or keeps records by hand. I appreciated this class period dearly. I discovered behind every building on campus there is a line of history. Every building I believe is named after someone with some significance. Howard the university itself, name comes from a man named General Oliver Otis Howard. Mordecai Wyatt Johnson who was the first black president at Howard. Inabel Burns Lindsay who was the first dean of the school of social work. Alain Leroy Locke who graduated from harvard, founded Phi Beta Kappa. Cramton Auditorium was named after Louis C. Cramton. This beautiful building is where all most big events are held, between concerts and step shows. At the freshman females dormitory the Courtyard of Tubman Quadrangle is named after Harriet Tubman. Truth Hall is named after Sojourner Truth a methodist who traveled in preaching. Prudence Crandall who opened the first school for African American girls. Phillis Wheatley who was the first African American woman to publish a book. Slowe Hall is named after a woman who was the first dean of women in 1922 on campus, and she was 1 of the 16 founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Drew Hall is named after Charles R. Drew who was the professor and chairman of surgery and he also studied blood transfusions. The biology building is named after Earnest Everett Just who discoverd you look at whole cells rather than in pieces, and was also a supporting founder and advisor of Omega Psi Phi alpha chapter here on campus. Even one of my R.A's told me my first day of school about the significance of every building and now I understand and suggest anyone who is interested should stay a few minutes after class to recognize the biographies usually found in the front of each building.
