This particular morning began with a slow start. I woke up late and walked into Freshman seminar semi tired. But when Dr. Benjamin began to speak I was happily awakened by the knowledge that she had to in part upon us. Being a student at Howard University I knew I was surrounded by a wonderfully rich history. But in listening to her speech I came to find out that not only was I surrounded by the legacy of the wonderful alumni of Howard, the physical buildings I had classes in were named after influential scribes. These were some of the individuals that were responsible for some of the written history here at Howard. Zora Neale Hurston for example was responsible for starting the Hilltop, the most well known published document here at Howard University.
